I wish my mom had taught me the correct names for my genitals and that saying the actual names was ok. I wish she has not waited until I was a teenager to give me a book to read about sex and bodies without ever mentioning anything about it prior. I wish I had been told about breastfeeding before I was freaked out to see the neighbor feeding her infant. I wish she had not asked me if I needed more “(whisper) pads,” as though my period were something to be ashamed of. I wish she had told me sex and my body were normal, unique, special and important. As a mom, I’m telling my 7-year-old son all the things I wish my mom had told me. I’m going to make mistakes, but I’ve got to start somewhere!
